Most Anticipated Netflix Original Movies Coming In 2022

2021 saw the return of moviegoers to theaters and re-ignited a crucial debate in the film industry:

Can the traditional theatrical model survive when streaming is a more inclusive and comfortable option?

Valid arguments exist on both sides, but the indisputable fact remains streaming is here to stay. And despite the ‘exclusively in theatres’ tag that many releases are now sporting, Netflix movies will always stream on their platform. While many blockbusters are coming to theatres, Netflix is not far behind, having their own line-up of impressive original movies releasing in the coming year.

So here’s our list of the most anticipated Netflix original movies coming in 2022.

Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2 & 3

Knives Out was a theatrical release, garnering critical and box office acclaim. The traditional murder mystery genre, subverted by Johnson with a unique story that also boasted a massive star-studded cast. So when we learned that Johnson would be working on two new sequels, every major studio wanted to be the home of the Knives Out-verse. While bidding was strong, Netflix bought the rights to the Knives Out universe, promising two new sequels. Johnson has confirmed his involvement and the sequels will be released in 2022 exclusively on Netflix. Making both movies high on our list of most anticipated 2022 movies.

Avengers Directors And Writers Return For The Gray Man

Another huge acquisition by Netflix is the upcoming, The Gray Man. While the headlines all discuss the two starring men, Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the behind-the-scenes are much more interesting. The Gray Man is a thriller based on a book, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, adapted into a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The team behind many of the Marvel Studios’ biggest hits are taking this on, which is a sure-fire way to invoke interest. It’s also among the most expensive Netflix originals ever, joining Red Notice as the only originals with budgets of $200 million.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Will Also Be On Netflix

Looks like Eddie Murphy is back, and here to stay. With the sequel to his original movie, Coming 2 America released on Amazon Prime Video, the iconic actor now sets his sights on Netflix. Finally doing a sequel of the franchise that put Murphy on the map, Beverly Hills Cop 4 is all set to release on Netflix. No word on what the story will be, but fans can expect a similar story progression like Coming 2 America, to account for all the years since the last movie.

Code 8: Part II Premieres On Netflix

Shifting gears to a newer film, Code 8 was a moderate success, given its independent film beginnings. The film was a small superhero story with an interesting world, headlined by two cousins. Stephen Amell of Arrow fame stars as a grumpy supervillain with powers. He recruits Robbie Amell’s (The Flash) character as the down on his luck super who needs a break. The movie was interesting and successful enough to warrant a sequel, releasing on Netflix in 2022.

The Adam Project With Ryan Reynolds

After the massive success of Free Guy in a post-pandemic theatre-going world, the director and actor duo are coming together for another massive project. The Adam Project will be from director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds. While I wasn’t a huge fan of either of Reynold’s Netflix collaborations like 6 Underground or the recent Red Notice, this sounds interesting. A man travels back in time to convince his younger self to confront their father. I’ve got chills already!

Netflix Has The The Stop Motion Pinocchio From Guillermo Del Toro

With Disney live-action adaptations all the rage, a different version is coming to Netflix in 2022. Based on the original story, acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro will be directing his own Pinocchio story for Netflix. But Disney also has their own live-action Pinocchio, remaking their animated film, set to release on Disney Plus in 2022. However, the biggest kicker is, that Del Toro’s movie is actually a stop motion animated film. Which is sure to set the two films apart in interesting and very distinguishable ways.

Vampire Hunting Never Looked As Good As Day Shift

Jamie Foxx’s first collaboration with Netflix in Power was a lot of fun. We’re still waiting on that franchise, while they seem to be building another one. Day Shift is a vampire hunting movie with a unique twist. This time around, a un unassuming father with a boring business actually hunts down vampires as he tries to provide for his daughter. It’s an interesting premise with a cool cast. Day Shift is set to release on Netflix sometime in 2022.
